Desktop PCI WLAN 802.11G Wireless Card — Can I remove the fixed antenna & mount in a nearby window?
Or possibly in the attic?
What kind of wire should I use?
What would be (roughly) the maximum allowable length of wire that I could use?
If relocating the antenna in this manner will not increase the wireless range . . . What is the least expensive way to increase the maximum working distance between the router and the PC?
And finally, would the answers to these questions be any different for a 802.11N card?

best to actually buy an external antenna, with the proper connector for the PCI card, and enough cable.
There is an issue with cable, if it is very small diameter, you lose a lot of signal very fast (over 10 feet). Larger diameter cable, like LMR240 or LMR400 will let you go a fair bit farther between computer and antenna. With LMR400 (1/2 inch diameter almost), you could go 50 feet with no major signal loss, up to 100 feet with some signal loss (about 3/4 of the signal)
